Use After Effects With Confidence

Whether you're a graphic designer looking to expand your skill set, a video editor wanting to add motion graphics to your projects, or a complete beginner, this course is designed to get you there and add 7 projects to your portfolio.

We'll start with the basics of After Effects and gradually build up to more advanced techniques, so you'll never feel overwhelmed or out of your depth.

You’ll gain the skills and confidence to tackle anything that comes your way, with hands-on projects to help you apply what you've learned and build your portfolio

Week 0 - Primer

If you're brand new to After Effects or want a refresher on the very basics, I've prepared an optional lesson to introduce After Effects for motion design and give you an overview of what it's capable of.

Week 1 - Fun & Fundamentals

In the first week of the course, we're going in-depth on the most essential elements of After Effects, the transform properties. These will be your building blocks for all motion to come as we explore motion, easing, and get comfortable in the software.

Week 2 - Flow & Workflow

In week 2, we're creating a scene from start to finish. How to think while starting a project, and how to follow a workflow that leads to a successful piece of animation. We explore more on easing with the speed graph, pacing, mattes, and reveals.

Week 3 - Motion & Effects

In week 3, we're building a sequence of 4 animated shots and connecting them with match cuts. We'll become familiar with the value graph editor to get compelling motion while introducing masks and effects to our toolkit.

Week 4 - Style & Substance

This week is all style.... (and some expressions.)

We're creating a simple looping animation with expressions and applying 5 common styles to it. We'll explore how and when to use these techniques by mixing effects, masks, mattes, and textures to bring a simple animation to another level.

Week 5 - Rest & Relaxation

In week 5, we're taking it easy with a shorter lesson and no assignment. I'll be showing off some frequently requested techniques, creating templates to speed up our workflow, and simplifying the animation process.

You'll have time to finish the previous weeks' assignments and start thinking ahead for your major project.

Week 6 - UI & Parallax

This week we'll examine how to create a complex scene out of simple techniques. We're animating UI elements, I'll introduce the Camera to create 3D parallax effects and we'll learn what small touches of animation will make our work stand out.

Week 7 - Tracking & Compositing

In week 7 we're bringing our 2D animation into the real world by tracking it into footage. We'll explore these techniques and how to use layers of effects and animation to make it feel like part of the scene and create a convincing illusion.

Week 8 - Major Project pt. 1

This week, we start building your own short explainer animation. We're planning out our storyboards, designing our style frames, and putting together an animatic with voice-over and music.

Week 9 - Major Project pt. 2

We're completing our explainer animation putting together everything we've learned throughout the course, adding transition effects, and learning animation techniques to keep the audience engaged, while we're on a tight budget and deadline.
